During the past couple of decades the paradigm of clinical and laboratory medicine has shifted beyond diagnosis and monitoring to include risk stratification and disease prediction. It is pertinent more than ever in the present era of “Managed Patient Care” for Clinicians and Pathologists to come to a decision on the most effective diagnostic strategy for a patient that blends clinical information with the laboratory results.
AFIP is fully aware of existing challenges in the discipline of laboratory medicine in our resource-limited setting. Being one of the first laboratories to be established in the country, it has evolved over the years to become the preeminent referral diagnostic facility. It is a multidisciplinary center with diagnostic, teaching and research capabilities.
At present AFIP has the widest test repertoire possible in any analytical setup. To ensure premier diagnostic care to its clients, AFIP is accredited as per the stringent quality standards of ISO 15189. All departments namely Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Histopathology, Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, FMSL and NMC, furnished with state-of-the-art equipment, are compliant with the aforementioned quality criteria.
The academic hierarchy of the institute conducts not only MCPS, FCPS, MPhil and PhD training programmes in respective disciplines of Pathology but also strives for continuing professional development by regularly conducting seminars, workshops and courses. Institute is therefore greatly acknowledged for the incessant contributions in the field of research and development.
AFIP realizes the strong challenges posed by the rapidly evolving diagnostic strategies in the days ahead. This is very clearly reflected in the commitment of the administration when it comes to procurement of high end modalities, be it; Genome Sequencing with the Next Generation Sequencers, recuperating quality of clinical chemistry results employing total lab automation and diagnosis of inherited metabolic disorders. With the anticipated quantum leap in the diagnostic armamentarium, AFIP aims to achieve the status when it could play a pivotal role in personalized medicine.
